A Downsizing Plan for your Manhattan Move

If it’s time to downsize for a move this summer in Manhattan, you might find yourself asking, “where do I start?” Downsizing and choosing what pieces or memories to part with can be a daunting task. Here are three easy steps to help you fit into your new space.

1. Start with a plan

It’s a great idea, if you have access, to take measurements of the new place or get your hands on a floor plan so you can estimate what will and won’t fit. Always err on the side of underestimating too, just so you don’t end up with too much furniture and not enough room. Pro tip: plan a day or so to go through each room in your house or apartment to parse down the belongings. This way you won’t get so overwhelmed.

2. Sort with a clear yes/no policy

You don’t want to let yourself get into the “maybe” territory here, so stick with a strict yes/no policy. Begin sorting belongings into those two categories. If you don’t use it, probably best to let it go. Duplicates? This is a good place to whittle away the pile and let go of second blender or extra dish set. You can donate the items that are still in good shape or pass special pieces down to friends and family.

3. Digitize to save space

Photo albums and memento bins can take up a lot of space. Consider making digitized copies of photos to play on a digital frame in your home. Or if you’re crafty, create scrapbooks of the scraps of tickets, receipts, ect from trips and special memories. You could even make a shadow box for a 3D display of mementos that won’t take up space in a closet. And finally, you can take pictures of mementos that you don’t want out but want to be able to look back on fondly. This will help you part with some of those pieces that take up space.

Follow these three steps to get started on your move to downsize in Manhattan. All the hard work will pay off when you’re settled comfortably in your new place.
